To be honest, the plot being meh and not fully utilizing its diverse cast is part of why I love K XD I remember seeing a post floating around Tumblr at one point discussing why it seems like the shows that have the biggest and loudest fandoms often aren’t the most high quality ones and that part of the reason for that is precisely because they aren’t the best – a show that delivers entirely on its plot, it characters, its worldbuilding, a show that leaves no important point unturned…it’s fun to watch and maybe even becomes a favorite show, but in the end there’s nothing for the fans to do but go ‘gosh, that show was awesome wasn’t it.’ Shows that have unfulfilled potential though, those kinds of shows are a total playground for fandom, with plenty of room to write and theorize and enjoy. So for me the fact that K’s plot isn’t the best and that it leaves a lot of things unsaid is one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much, because there’s a lot of things that the series itself doesn’t deliver on and so it’s up to the fandom to do it instead. While I do wish there were some improvements (I’ve posted before about how much editing ROK was desperately in need of, and sometimes it’s disappointing when I really want the show to give closure to a plot or character point and it doesn’t) I like that there’s so much that goes unexplained in K, like we don’t even know the real origin of the Dresden Slate and it doesn’t matter because if I want to write a fic about that I could make it whatever I wanted and I wouldn’t have to worry that canon did it first.
And a big part of that potential too, and the real heart of why I love the series, is that K has a really wonderful cast of characters. For me, if I had to choose between a show with a great plot and okay characters or a show with a messy plot but wonderful characters I will choose the great characters every time. Even though K doesn’t deliver on a lot of things on the character front the basic bones of it are all there, especially once you bring the side materials into play (and those are actually what made me love K in the first place, because that’s where all the good meaty character stuff is hiding). K has a nice strong cast of characters, not just the ‘main’ group but even the side characters like the alphabet boys have just enough characterization to make them fun and interesting. So in the end it comes down to two main points: that K has great characters and that it doesn’t fully utilize most of them to the extent that they could be, which lets me fill in the blanks on things that aren’t mentioned while also loving all the parts that we do have. Like Fushimi is just a precious disaster of a human being, Yata is a ball of sunshine that will also fuck your shit up if he has to, Munakata’s a regal and cunning King but also a big giant dork, the series is full of characters who fit certain archetypes but have just enough originality to them that it makes them all charming and I love all of them (…almost all of them *punches Niki in the face*). It’s nowhere near a perfect series but if it was I wouldn’t have so much interest in it, I think K manages to fit right in that sweet spot where they give you just enough to love while still leaving plenty to the imagination.

OMG imagine them being total little shits to each other. Like say Yata’s the new intern at Homra Security Firm, which due to budget and remodeling reasons suddenly has to share an office space with tech company Scepter 4 Systems. Yata figures it can’t be that bad, those nerds at Scepter 4 probably just sit at their desks all day coding and Homra can just ignore them. Yata heads over to his shiny new cubicle, which happens to be right next to the thin aisle that separates Homra’s space from Scepter 4’s. Yata notes that the guy from Scepter 4 sitting right across the aisle from him sure types fast and just look at that nerd with his thick glasses and his gloomy face. Yata meanwhile puts his headphones on because he likes to listen to music as he starts reading over some reports that Kusanagi gave him. He’s focused on his work when suddenly he gets hit in the back of the head by an eraser. Yata looks around wondering who did that but everyone’s busy working and the Scepter 4 guy hasn’t even looked up. Yata’s like ‘huh,’ shrugging and going back to his work. He’s humming a little to the music when an eraser hits him again. This time Yata jumps up like okay who the fuck did that and Kusanagi scolds him because everyone’s busy working. Yata laughs sheepishly and sits back down, he’s about to put his headphones back on when he hears this soft tongue click. Yata glances over at the Scepter 4 guy who mutters that Yata’s music is too loud. Yata’s like what the hell you’re way over there you can’t hear it and the guy says that he can and only kids need music in order to work. The guy glances at the name on Yata’s desk and adds a ’Misaki,’ Yata’s like hey don’t use my first name asshole and looks at the other guy’s name as he’s like ’…Saruhiko.’ Fushimi clicks his tongue again and tells Yata not to use his first name either, flicking another eraser at him. Yata scowls and grabs some papers, making a paper airplane and flying it right into the back of Fushimi’s head. Fushimi glares back and the war is on.
So from this point on the two of them are constantly getting on each other’s nerves, like Yata gets to work one morning to find a crayon and a sticky note taped to his desk saying ‘this is more appropriate for your level of penmanship.’ Yata leaves notes all along the wall of Fushimi’s cubicle reading ‘BEWARE OF ASSHOLE,’ Fushimi retaliates by putting notes along Yata’s side of the aisle reading 'MORON CROSSING.’ Maybe Yata like has a motorcycle that he drives to work and he usually likes this spot right in the corner of the parking lot next to the building, Fushimi makes certain to park his own motorcycle there instead (and Yata’s wondering who the asshole is who took his spot, and then is both annoyed but also grudgingly impressed because Saruhiko’s motorcycle is newer and more expensive than his and it does look kinda cool maybe). Yata swaps rolling chairs with Bandou, who just so happened to get the squeakiest chair in the office and makes certain to go everywhere by just rolling his chair around, smirking as he watches Fushimi grit his teeth. Fushimi buys a bunch of small erasers and hits Yata in the back of the head with them at every opportunity, no matter how hard Yata tries to dodge Fushimi always hits him perfectly. They bring each other coffee that’s burning hot or bagels covered in super hot chili sauce just to try and screw with each other. At one point Fushimi actually hacks Yata’s computer so that all day Yata has to try and do his work with this big wallpaper background that’s just his first name repeated over and over.
The most annoying thing though is that Fushimi is constantly stealing Yata’s supplies. Like at first Yata thinks one of the other guys in his office keeps borrowing his pens and then maybe one day he brings in this super cool pen with flames on the side and tells everyone not to touch it. Naturally it goes missing and Yata’s looking everywhere for it only to spot Fushimi sitting there calmly writing out papers with Yata’s pen. Yata’s like give that back asshole and Fushimi’s all 'Oh? But aren’t office partners supposed to share supplies, Misaki?’ Yata tries complaining about Fushimi to Fushimi’s boss Munakata, but Munakata creeps him out and is also of course super indulgent and wonders if perhaps Yata-kun does not believe in good office relations. Yata grumbles about it and tells Fushimi to leave his stuff alone from now on, naturally this escalates into Fushimi stealing his pencils, paperclips, and anything else he can get his hands on. Yata takes Fushimi’s stapler in retaliation and it turns into two weeks of back and forth as they try to defend the stapler from each other. (And then one day Yata goes to get a drink at the water cooler, complaining to himself about how annoying that Saruhiko is, when he spots two Scepter 4 members standing there drinking and talking about how they’ve never seen Fushimi-san flirt as hard with anyone the way he’s flirting with that Yata Misaki. Yata’s sitting there dumbfounded like 'what kind of asshole would think that’s flirt—OMG.’)

I’m imagining Yata kissing Fushimi in front of S4 when Fushimi isn’t aware that anyone is watching and when he realizes that everyone saw him be kissed he gets all irritated and blushing. Like maybe Yata’s started stopping by Scepter 4 to bring Fushimi meals and make sure he’s not overworking himself and sometimes they hang out on breaks and stuff. The two of them have started dating but they’re keeping it kinda low key because Fushimi doesn’t want to have all the rest of Scepter 4 being all annoying and trying to talk to him about romance (plus they’re clumsy nerds who don’t quite know how to romance so Yata figures they won’t let everyone know about it until they’re ready). One day Yata stops by Scepter 4 like usual and maybe he catches sight of like Hidaka talking to Fushimi and there’s something with how friendly Hidaka’s being that sets Yata’s teeth on edge a little. Like he does like Hidaka and he wants Saruhiko to be friends with his clan but Hidaka keeps putting his hand on Fushimi’s shoulder and it just keeps rolling around in Yata’s head that no one here knows that Yata and Fushimi are dating. That’s when Fushimi notices Yata standing there and Yata gets all awkward like ‘uh, yeah, I thought we could hang out on your break, if you’re not busy…’ Fushimi clicks his tongue and says it’s fine, walking past Yata and then turning to look back at him wondering if he’s coming or did he just come all this way to stare. Yata glances back towards Hidaka and then he’s like yeah yeah I’m coming.
The two of them head outside the building and Yata asks Fushimi about what he was talking to Hidaka about, Fushimi says it was just a work thing and not anything interesting. Yata feels a little bolstered by that and maybe even gets up the courage to ask if Fushimi wants to go out to dinner tonight. Fushimi agrees, also a little awkward and possibly trying not to meet Yata’s eyes to avoid blushing. As Yata’s talking to him he spots Hidaka and a couple of the other Scepter 4 guys walking in the courtyard right near the gate where they’re standing. Yata coughs a little and is like well, okay, I’ll see you later and then he leans in and plants one right on Fushimi’s lips. Fushimi’s a bit surprised by this, not prepared for the kiss and especially not prepared for virgin Misaki to be the one to instigate it but he’s not going to complain and he kisses back. When the two of them separate though there’s like a scattering of applause and a wolf whistle and Fushimi suddenly realizes that everyone is staring at them. Yata finds himself grinning a little even though his cheeks are flushed, like he just showed those guys who Saruhiko belongs to while Fushimi is already threatening to pull a knife on whoever did the wolf whistle. Of course now everyone wants to ask him about his relationship too and Yata figures this would be a good time to make his retreat while Fushimi’s busy threatening his coworkers (Fushimi gets Yata back later of course, by storming right into Bar Homra in front of everyone, grabbing Yata by his collar and giving him a deep kiss with tongue while everyone stares and Kusanagi covers Anna’s eyes).

Yata would look good wearing nothing but Fushimi’s work shirt, imagine Fushimi’s face when he realizes that Yata’s wearing his shirt and only his shirt. Like say usually Yata wakes up before Fushimi and makes breakfast and everything but one day Fushimi manages to actually get up first. He has some work to finish up so he slides out of bed, glancing at Yata still peacefully asleep on the opposite side of the bed and smiling briefly as he reaches out a hand to stroke Yata’s hair. Yata stirs and Fushimi shifts a little, like everything is so peaceful and calm that it’s hard to stop himself from feeling like this could fall apart at any moment. He sits up and puts on his glasses and a pair of pants as he heads into the living room, sitting on the couch and pulling up his laptop. In a short time he’s totally engrossed in his work to the point that he doesn’t even think about how he hasn’t eaten breakfast yet and his stomach is noticeably growling, or that he can vaguely hear the sounds of Yata stirring in the next room.
That’s when someone lightly hits the back of his head and he hears Yata’s fondly irritated voice all ‘really monkey, what did I tell you about overworking yourself? Did you even eat yet?’ Fushimi clicks his tongue and looks up, about to argue that he has work to finish, and then suddenly his mouth just snaps shut as he sees Yata standing there next to him wearing nothing but Fushimi’s partially-buttoned work shirt. The shirt only just covers Yata’s torso and Fushimi can see all this leg and a nice dip of his collar showing bare chest and if Yata turns and bends Fushimi would probably get a nice full view of everything. Yata doesn’t even notice that Fushimi’s gone quiet, telling Fushimi to put the laptop away for a minute and Yata will go make them something to eat. Fushimi’s like ’…Misaki…’ and Yata looks at him all curious like ‘Oh yeah, and what the hell did you do with my clothes last night asshole? This was all I could find, you could at least have left my pants where I could get to them…’ Fushimi swallows hard and then manages a nice smirk as he teases Yata for being so short it makes him look like a kid wearing Fushimi’s shirt, Yata’s like fuck you this thing should be huge on you too because you’re so fucking skinny. Fushimi’s enjoying the view now and Yata says he’s gonna go start breakfast, maybe Fushimi decides to be sneaky and like ‘accidentally’ throws his pen at a lamp, making Yata bend down to catch it while Fushimi admires and makes a mental note to always make sure Misaki’s clothes are left out of reach as often as possible.

Maybe the two of them have gotten married but are going through a small rough patch right around Valentine’s Day, Yata’s getting frustrated because they’ve only been married like a year and Fushimi’s being all stubborn about going on romantic dates or complaining that Valentine’s Day is stupid and doing it in a way that implies Yata is stupid for thinking that Valentine’s Day should be a special time spent with someone you love. They argue and Fushimi ends up storming out, stating he needs to get to work and ignoring how Yata’s yelling behind him. Yata gets super annoyed, muttering ‘stupid Saruhiko’ as he clenches his fists and bites his lip, hating the way his eyes are burning. He ends up just wandering around the apartment, he took the day off from his part time job so he could spend some time with Fushimi and yet everything still went sour, here after they agreed to talk to each other honestly about things from now on. Yata tries to busy himself with like cleaning in one of the closets and that’s when this pale dried rose pressed between the pages of a small journal falls out.
Yata pauses and picks up the rose, wondering for a moment where it came from before he remembers and gets this soft nostalgic smile. It was the first Valentine’s Day they spent together, him and Fushimi, and they hadn’t even been dating then. He remembers how things were still so awkward between them then, like Yata knew he was in love with Fushimi but he didn’t know if his feelings were returned and he was afraid that saying so would scare Fushimi away and cause them to break again. Because of that he pushed away from Fushimi a little and even though he could see how it was making Fushimi confused he still let his fears get in the way of their relationship. Then on Valentine’s Day he found this small journal in front of his apartment with a rose pressed between the pages and an address, with a note to meet someone there. Yata freaked out at the time, wondering if it was a girl and what should he do, what should he say, he’s never had a secret admirer before. And then he thought ’…but what about Saruhiko?’ and immediately shook his head, telling himself that that’s never going to happen so he should just be bold and go see this person right, maybe something good will happen.
So Yata followed the instructions in the journal and ended up at this small outdoor Italian place that he thought looked a little familiar before he remembered that isn’t this one of Kusanagi’s restaurants. Yata walked inside, feeling kinda out of place and awkward but when he gave his name to the waiter it was like he was expected and Yata was led to a table where Fushimi was sitting, also holding a book and a rose. Yata was all confused but he remembers he also felt his cheeks getting warm as he realized that Saruhiko invited him here, that Fushimi must feel the same way. Fushimi just clicked his tongue and at the time Yata thought maybe Fushimi was just being a tsundere about the whole thing. They ended up just talking through the whole meal though and Yata was finally able to admit his feelings and Fushimi actually returned them and Yata can recall how his heart felt like it was going to jump out of his chest, he was so happy. As they were leaving he asked why Fushimi chose this restaurant and Fushimi clicked his tongue again and said didn’t Misaki choose it. Shortly afterward they learned that Anna had actually been the one to set everything up, because she could feel how much pain they were both in and wanted to see them happy and Yata was so thankful to her, that she went so far to bring them back together.
He’s still reminiscing when he hears the sound of the door opening and Yata turns to see Fushimi standing there looking all awkward and holding some roses. Yata’s confused and Fushimi mumbles something that might be an apology. Turns out Fushimi went to Bar Homra instead of work and maybe he ended up confiding in Anna a little how he feels like he’s always ruining things with Misaki and she encouraged him to keep trying and not give up, that she knows Saruhiko’s feelings are true and she thinks they would both be sadder without the other. Yata smiles as he murmurs that Anna’s always rooting for them both, huh, and Fushimi shrugs, still all awkward and shy and Yata just laughs and hugs him, calling him an idiot. Fushimi’s like don’t call me an idiot, idiot but he’s smiling a little and Yata can see he’s happy and it’s enough to remind him why they just need to keep moving forward, even if things get rough the two of them will be fine because Yata loves Fushimi and he knows that Fushimi loves him.

I was having trouble thinking of something for this and then the new poster art was leaked and now all I can think of is soft Sarumi winter coffee dates. Like imagine it’s just gotten cold again and the snow is falling and Yata calls Fushimi to ask if he wants to meet for coffee. Fushimi’s complaining because it’s cold out and he has work to finish and there’s snow, Yata’s like come on monkey you’ve been hibernating in that stuffy office all day come get some coffee with me. Fushimi didn’t even know Yata liked coffee and wonders if he’s just going to get sugar with coffee in it like a little kid and Yata insists that he can drink coffee, he’s matured you know and besides he’s probably better at drinking coffee than Fushimi is with alcohol, referencing their last date. Fushimi clicks his tongue and says he doubts that and Yata’s like come on, I found a good new coffee place and everything. Fushimi keeps acting like he isn’t going to come but then he’s like ‘I’ll meet you outside in ten minutes’ right before he hangs up and on the other end of the line Yata’s face just lights up and he’s all ‘on my way.’
He meets Fushimi outside Scepter 4 and then promptly sends Fushimi back inside because it’s fucking cold out why aren’t you wearing a scarf. Fushimi says he doesn’t need to hear that from a guy who wore shorts in the snow and Yata’s like yeah well even I’m in a coat today so you need to be too you’re too fucking skinny to be out here without a scarf. Yata follows Fushimi back to Fushimi’s dorm and digs out proper warm weather clothing before letting Fushimi leave, Fushimi’s got a scarf on and maybe some earmuffs and he’s sulking about it but also red in the face from more than cold with the way Yata’s still fussing over him the whole way. The coffee shop is close enough to walk to and they go side by side, breath making clouds in the air and as they walk Yata notices that Fushimi didn’t bring gloves either. Fushimi shrugs and says he doesn’t have any and Yata sighs and then coughs nervously before grabbing Fushimi’s hand in his and stuffing both their hands in his pocket. Fushimi raises an eyebrow but doesn’t say anything, and both their cheeks are definitely red.
Once they get into the coffee shop it’s warm and inviting, there’s a fireplace in the corner with the fire going and Yata drags Fushimi over to that spot. Fushimi complains that it’s stuffy in here and Yata tells him to take off his coat, they both order coffee and maybe Yata gets a little more sugar than Fushimi which means another round of teasing. As the warmth of the fire brings a bit more feeling back to their frozen fingertips Yata notes that Fushimi’s face is red and Fushimi says Yata’s is too, Yata rubs his hands against his cheeks and says he’s all right. They sit there for a while and drink coffee and chat about anything that comes to mind, Yata is in a happy bright mood and he just feels like he wants to talk to Saruhiko about anything and everything, maybe babbling a little at the moments when his eyes meet Fushimi’s and he gets just caught up in that bright blue before Fushimi immediately looks down into his cup again. There’s the beginnings of a smile hovering on Fushimi’s face though and that’s enough, that’s the thing that warms Yata even more than the fire and the coffee.
Afterward they walk back to Scepter 4, Fushimi says he doesn’t need Yata to walk with him but Yata says he doesn’t mind as he nervously grabs Fushimi’s hand again and pulls it back into his pocket. There’s a pause and then Fushimi’s fingers curl around his all on their own, holding Yata just a little tighter and Yata’s so surprised he can’t help but look up into Fushimi’s face. Fushimi’s half hiding in his scarf, not quite looking at Yata but his hand feels warm and Yata just shakes his head and smiles. They walk side by side all the way back and then stop at the gate and Yata shifts nervously as he’s like I guess I gotta go too now. Fushimi nods and then gives this quiet ’…thank you for the coffee.’ He starts to turn to head inside when Yata yells his name, Fushimi stops and turns and then Yata just walks up to him and pulls his scarf down just enough for Yata to kiss his lips. It’s quick and warm like a star touching down and Fushimi’s nose is red, more white breath hovering in the air and Yata smiles so brightly Fushimi’s amazed the snow around him hasn’t melted. Yata finally manages to tear his gaze from Fushimi’s, raising a hand as he says he’ll see Fushimi later, and they both part with blazing cheeks and warmth still lingering on the tips of their fingers and against their lips.

….I am very up for Fushimi in sexy bellydancer outfit with hidden knives inside performing a sexy dance trying to get close to Munakata to kill him all while Munakata watches him with this intrigued look on his face. Like say Munakata’s fairly newly crowned and has a lot of enemies from other factions who didn’t want him to ascend the throne. One particular group, the jungle faction, feel that Munakata’s rule will not be good for the country and that the only true way to give everyone freedom and make all people equal is to kill Munakata and allow the kingdom to descend into anarchy. Munakata is too strong to topple on his own though, he has a very loyal group of retainers and even all the royal soldiers are handpicked by him for their skill and courage. Everyone who works directly under Munakata is extremely loyal to him, Munakata has like this strange kind of charisma where he can bring out people’s hidden talents and how he can see parts of other people that even they are unable to see. He’s also very popular among the common folk, as he originally was born a commoner himself who managed to rise in the ranks of the nobles and then become King (maybe he was like the illegitimate son of the previous King and this is also why he has so many enemies, especially as his older half brother Habari Jin died in a war with the neighboring kingdom of Homra shortly before the old King passed away, leaving Munakata as the only one left who had a legitimate claim to the throne).
So naturally Munakata’s various enemies have tried multiple times to assassinate him and all have failed, Munakata is too well guarded and far too intelligent for any common cutthroat to take him down. Jungle finally sends in one of their secret weapons, Fushimi, whose father was a spy for them even in the days of the previous King. Fushimi’s grown up hating everything about the kingdom, he hates his father for always treating him as a plaything and hates jungle for using him as a tool, he hates the King who sits in his opulent palace and looks down on everyone else. Feeling that he has nowhere that he belongs, Fushimi agrees to be the one who will assassinate Munakata. He sneaks into the palace under false pretenses, there’s a great celebration being planned for Munakata’s birthday and Fushimi is able to blend in with the rest of the entertainment. Maybe he spends some time with like the various theater troupes hanging around the palace, not mingling with them at all but staying close so that he can blend in. He’s practicing his dance by himself when one of the other people there bumps into him and nearly causes him to lose his balance, he’s promptly caught by a man in common clothes who was wandering the area. That person is Munakata in disguise returning from visiting the nearby villagers but Fushimi doesn’t know it, pulling away and complaining about Munakata touching him without permission. Munakata apologizes and then reaches down and returns a knife to Fushimi that was dropped, Fushimi is immediately on guard but Munakata only smiles and compliments his skill and form before disappearing into the crowd.
Later that evening Fushimi is invited to dance before the King, of course he knows it’s too dangerous to kill Munakata in front of everyone but he figures this will let him get close enough to find Munakata’s weak spots and to memorize the layout of the throne room. The door opens and Fushimi enters the throne room, bowing in front of the throne before he hears a familiar voice note that it seems they meet again. Fushimi freezes for a moment, realizing who Munakata is before regaining his composure and beginning his dance. He’s putting all his skill into it, getting close to Munakata and trying to do all he can to keep Munakata’s gaze on him in hopes of making Munakata forget about the knife (oh maybe he does pull a couple knives out though and the guards start to move before Munakata motions for them to stand down and Fushimi uses the knives in his dance to make it seem like they’re a harmless part of the show). The whole time Munakata’s eyes are on Fushimi and Fushimi doesn’t know why that makes him feel so exposed, like this person can see everything he’s thinking. When he’s finished Munakata applauds and praises his skill again, Fushimi clicks his tongue and quickly takes his leave.
That night Fushimi climbs into Munakata’s room through the window, dressed in loose clothing with knives at his waist. He slips easily between the shadows, avoiding all the guards and making his way into Munakata’s room where Munakata is asleep in bed. Fushimi climbs over him, raising the knife but then finding himself hesitating and he doesn’t know why, only finding himself thinking again of Munakata’s keen gaze and the words of praise that he spoke. Fushimi’s face twists in irritation that he could be so sentimental and he starts to lower the knife, which is when Munakata’s eyes open and he notes that once again Fushimi has surpassed his expectations. Fushimi leaps off of him, prepared to dart out the window and cursing over his blown cover, when Munakata holds out a hand to stop him. He doesn’t know who hired Fushimi and he will not make Fushimi tell him, however he does have a proposal – that Fushimi become Munakata’s man instead, and work for him. Fushimi scoffs, assuming it has to be a trick, but he’s surprised again when Munakata repeats his offer in what is clearly complete sincerity, that he wishes to have someone of Fushimi’s talents by his side.

Say the two of them end up working together to hunt down this Strain and it ends up being so stressful and dangerous that they just start hugging in relief before they even realize that anyone is watching. Like maybe this is post-ROK and things are still kinda awkward between them, like Yata wants to get closer to Fushimi but he doesn’t know how far he can push while Fushimi’s still hesitant about letting Yata past his walls. The Strain they’re chasing turns out to be super dangerous, like maybe it has powers similar to Neko’s and can create illusions and mess with the senses. Yata and Fushimi end up chasing it into somewhere hard to navigate, like the Strain leads them into the sewer system and they end up getting separated and lost, neither of their PDAs work and there’s no way to contact each other or their respective clans. Yata’s getting so worried and yelling Fushimi’s name and then the Strain keeps taunting him by showing him illusions of Fushimi’s dead body or of Fushimi acting the way he does in S1, taunting Yata and saying they’ll never be friends. Meanwhile Fushimi’s being toyed with too, seeing images of a Yata who ignores him or who dies because Fushimi can’t protect him and even though Fushimi knows this isn’t really Yata it puts him on edge.
Finally they manage to take the Strain down, maybe like the Strain tries to confuse them by making a bunch of illusions of each other and Yata and Fushimi have to trust in the other in order to work together and take the Strain down. They’re separated but can hear each other and agree to meet up back up on the street. They manage to subdue the Strain and then hurry to get above ground, Yata ends up in an alley looking around desperately and then he sees Fushimi a few feet away and yells his name. Fushimi looks up and for a moment this just totally innocent and vulnerable look passes his face as he yells Yata’s name. The two of them run towards each other and Yata’s even tearing up slightly as he just throws his arms around Fushimi and Fushimi wraps his own arms around Yata without even realizing it, the two of them so thankful and relieved to be together again, tired out and supporting each other and it’s just like they’re partners again.
That’s when they hear this awkward cough behind them and both of them freeze as they realize that their entire respective clans have shown up searching for them and everyone is just sitting back and watching their cute thankful hug. Yata gets all red and starts sputtering about it like ‘w-what are all you assholes looking at’ while Fushimi just looks away and pushes up his glasses as he clicks his tongue. Everyone is so happy for them though, imagine Munakata just pats Fushimi on the shoulder with a smile and Fushimi’s like ‘what’s with that look Captain’ while the Homra guys are all telling Yata good job and Anna’s smiling up at him while Yata tries to explain that they were just exhausted and then he kinda trails off glancing at Fushimi. Fushimi looks back at the same time, their eyes meet and then they both go red again and look away while everyone else continues to smile and look on at these idiots in love.

Imagine Yata just randomly calling Fushimi like all the time after they reconcile for no reason other than he can, like Yata won’t admit it but he’s really happy that he and Fushimi are back on friendly terms and sometimes he just wants to hear Fushimi’s voice and feel like it’s old times when they could talk to each other about anything. He definitely isn’t going to tell Fushimi that though so he’s always finding a reason to call, like he probably calls Fushimi a couple times a day to complain about Scepter 4 butting in on Homra’s territory and half the time Fushimi hangs up after a few words and then Yata will call again and suddenly he’s asking if Fushimi’s ever been to this new cafe that opened near the bar and hey you wanna meet there for lunch you probably need a break from working too much you stupid monkey. Or Yata will call acting like he’s following up on some Homra thing but actually he’s just trying to check in on Fushimi and make sure that he’s eating right and not overworking himself and Fushimi complains that Yata’s like a mother hen. Yata denies it but he totally is, like half the time he calls right around when he knows Fushimi’s supposed to be on lunch and the first sentence out of his mouth is always ‘did you eat all the lunch I packed you, you better not have thrown the vegetables away again.’ Fushimi complains at him about it a bunch, like maybe Yata called one time while he was giving a report or another time during a meeting and Fushimi spent like ten minutes complaining to Yata in the corner while Awashima glared at him and coughed significantly. Yata starts to wonder if maybe he’s bothering Saruhiko, like he knows he should probably tone it down but it’s like this is a tangible thing he can hold onto, real proof that he and Fushimi really have made up and that Yata can call him and talk to him any time without worrying about it breaking into a fight (and then maybe when he’s worrying about it Kamamoto’s like ‘but Yata-san, if Fushimi didn’t want to talk to you wouldn’t he just not answer his phone?’ and Yata realizes that maybe he’s not the only one who wants to talk, because if Fushimi really hated being interrupted that much he wouldn’t even answer in the first place).

OMG they would never get him off the internet (wait wait imagine him with mobile games he would never stop playing Candy Crush, he’d be even more attached to his PDA than Saru is to his). Like maybe he’s been putting together the same puzzles over and over again and admits to Fushimi one day that perhaps it has become a little boring. Say this is after ROK too and Munakata’s lost his King powers and all of Scepter 4 is worried that maybe he’s a bit depressed by it. They’re all wondering how they can make their King a little more energetic and that’s when they overhear him talking about the puzzles, without even really meaning to Fushimi mutters that why doesn’t Munakata just try some online puzzles. Munakata is naturally all intrigued, like what is an ‘online puzzle’ Fushimi-kun? Fushimi sighs but he totally shows Munakata how to find puzzles to do online. While he’s at it he also shows Munakata a site where like you can make and customize your own puzzles and Munakata keeps asking him questions and it’s probably like a teenager trying to show his grandfather how to use this fancy new thing called the internet. Munakata pays very close attention to what Fushimi shows him though and it’s clear by the time Fushimi leaves that there is a definite spark in Munakata’s eyes. Fushimi figures well at least this will keep Captain from bothering him for a while and everyone is so impressed and pleased that their King seems more energetic now.
Unfortunately it soon escalates as Munakata spends more and more time online making what are probably the most complicated puzzles ever, like maybe the site has a function where people can share the puzzles they’ve made and Munakata has become like the bane of the whole site because no one can solve his puzzles, the function used to create them means they can’t be fundamentally unsolvable so there should be a solution but no one can find it. The forums are full of people gossiping about this frightening new user called BlueKing01 and how the must be some kind of insane genius. Fushimi probably checks it out at some point just to see what Munakata’s been doing all this time, the rest of the alphabet boys are curious too and like leaning over his shoulder as he reads message after message about the terrible unsolvable puzzles and Fushimi realizes that he has created a monster.
